There are two options for trekking on the Perito Moreno Glacier: “mini trekking” and the “big ice” trek. Both are full day trips run through Hielo & Aventura in El Calafate.
The treks start by dropping bus loads of people at the main lookout, which has several viewing platforms to see different angles and watch the ice breaking off the face of the glacier. A boat then takes everyone right up close and across the Rico Arm of the glacier to a refuge, where we had lunch and were fitted for crampons to walk on the ice. The minitrek involves 1.5 hours on the ice, while the big trek goes deeper on to the glacier and involves about 4 hours of ice time.
The mountains of ice were spectacular! We walked past cracks in the ice, streams, lagoons and sink holes.
